“Is this one of those times where I just say ‘okay dad’ and don’t ask questions?” A slight smirk quirked up the corners of her mouth. Molly could remember how John had nearly lost his mind when Molly went through the phase of hers where she had to know everything about anything and everything.

The childhood nickname made her smile though, a genuine smile. “It’s real good to see you again, dad. I mean it.”

John grinned at her, more easily than he’d been able to with the boys and he reached out, wrapping his arms around her as he drew her in for a hug. He rested his scruffy cheek against the top of her head before he pressed a kiss there. “It’s good to see you too.”

Molly nuzzled into the hug, missing her dad’s hugs. It had been way too long since she’d seen him. “Hey, you should come to my motel room with me. We’ll have a couple beers, catch up a little.” She peered up at him hopefully, a smile on her lips. “Because I think I deserve a damn good explanation about where the hell you went.”

Molly brushed a lock of hair behind her ear, her other hand shoved in her jeans pocket. “…Were you on a hunt?” she asked, wanting to get to the point. He knew well enough that she knew what was really out there. He’d shown her how to protect herself and how to keep her mom safe. He knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps, but he didn’t know she’d been chasing after him and hunting all along the way since he’d disappeared. “I was worried sick, dad.”

“It’s more complicated’n that, Molls,” he responded, using his childhood nickname for her. He hadn’t stayed away by choice, but because the time had come to finally do right by his other kids.

He’d gone to Hell to keep Dean alive and it wasn’t something he’d ever regret, though he hated that he couldn’t take back all the time he’d lost.

Molly gave a soft smile, the sight of her father acting like a balm, a tonic. She’d been so torn up about him just disappearing around her graduation day, but he was back. He was back and that meant everything would be okay. “Hey dad,” she said quietly, her voice a little raspy, all whiskey and cigarettes. “I missed you.”

“Missed you too, darlin’,” John responded. With Molly, it had always been easy. There was none of Mary there, no remnants of the love of his life he’d lost. He’d been able to be the father to Molly that he’d wished he coulda been for Sam and Dean. His only regret with her was the time he’d been apart from her, but he was going to do his best now to make it up to her.

“…Dad…”

John’s face softened from the grizzled look her normally wore at the sight of his daughter. She’d been the apple of his eye when she was younger. His little princess. Reaching out, he thumbed the tear away. “Hi, baby.”
